A huge percentage of Australians have worked at McDonald’s.
The fast food giant has revealed today that since it opening its doors in 1971, it has hired five per cent of the Australian population.
That’s about 1.3 million Aussies who have worked at Macca’s over the years.
Most of the people Macca’s employed were under the age of 25, and for most of them it was their first job.
It makes the company one of the largest employers of young people, a role the company takes seriously offering on the job training and experience to their employees.
Nationally, 1.3 million people have worked at Macca’s since the company opened its first store in Yagoona. Just over one million of these were people under 25.
The company also gets good feedback from their current and former staff when it comes to how prepared they feel for future work.
In recent research commissioned by McDonald’s Australia, the restaurant chain asked employees, parents and former employees how successfully they felt Macca’s was preparing them for “future careers”.
Ninety-five per cent of those surveyed said they felt their work at the fast food chain was giving them “useful life skills and skills that will be valuable in the future”.
“At Macca’s, we’re so proud to be able to offer so many young Australians what is often their first job,” McDonald’s Australia chief people officer Jennifer St Ledger said.
“We take that responsibility very seriously and believe it is our privilege to provide them with the foundations to build skills for life, setting them up for future success.
“Beyond offering practical, on-the-job experience in our restaurants, we also offer courses through our intranet and face-to-face training at the Charlie Bell School of Management, Hamburger University and training centres across the country.”
Hamburger University is a corporate training facility in Chicago, Illinois, which teaches restaurant management.
“We’ve been a Registered Training Organisation for over 20 years, so many of these courses provide our people with externally recognised qualifications that are not just relevant to their progression at McDonald’s, but to other career paths in the business, retail, food service or hospitality sectors,” Ms St Ledger said.
There are currently over 980 McDonalds Australia restaurants across the country employing more than 105,000 people in restaurant and corporate positions.
The business is the largest national employer of youth in the country, creating 3000 new jobs each year.
