Forget about waking up and smelling the roses. Starting today, countless of SA homeowners will be vying for a sniff of rubber to start their day in support of the 223 riders that will race past their homes in the annual Santos Tour Down Under.
While individual race stages differ each year, the Adelaide Hills in particular have long been a firm favourite among both professional and amateur cyclists.
This is something which has not gone unnoticed among locals, with many of the towns going the extra mile to welcome the onslaught of tourists, riders and their entourage by hosting street parties and decorating buildings and landmarks in support of the event.
But there’s also a more serious site to the celebration. With countless of properties for sale dotting the streets of the individual stages, local real estate agents hope the increased traffic would help attract buyers.

Among such homes is 1/39 Mount Barker Rd, Hahndorf which is listed for sale through Harcourts Williams with a price guide of $700,000 to $750,000.
Hahndorf will today serve as the official starting point for Stage 1 of the women’s Ziptrak race to Birdwood, via Balhannah, Oakabank, Woodside, Lobethal, Gumeracha, Forreston and Mount Pleasant. The race will commence at 10am.
Selling agent Michael Vaselli said he key events generally helped attract more buyers to a region.
“Events like the Tour Down Under definitely help sell homes and I encourage people to get in touch for inspections if they are coming up to watch the event,” he said.
“This particular house in particular has already received some interest as it sits along the main street.
“It’s great property and essentially two separate residences, each with its own kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms. It’s got a lot of potential.”
Georgie Weston of Raine&Horne Oakbank is also calling on buyers to mix business with pleasure.
Her listing at 231 Onkaparinga Valley Rd, Oakbank will be one hard to miss and is already a local icon due to a unique Banksy-inspired mural gracing the front of the home.
Oakbank will be the fourth leg of today’s Stage 1 race with cyclist to arrive at approximately 10.32am.
“If someone had already made up their mind that they’d like to live in the Adelaide Hills and may have not considered certain areas, then coming past these properties along the way certainly help them find their match,” she said.
“This property certainly has a lot of potential and comes with a commercial past.
“However, the current owners purchased the property 10 to 12 years ago and did a full renovation of the home.”
For buyers looking for a little more room to move, 226 Cromer Rd, Birdwood may appeal.
The 31.4ha property is set on the outskirts of the town and comes with quality grazing pastures, eight paddocks, 2000 olive trees and two separate dwellings.
Birdwood is the final leg of the race with cyclist expected to cross the finish line from 1.47pm.
