Friends tell of star’s secret kindness

Luke Perry’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from Hollywood and the star’s many devastated fans around the globe.

But it’s the heartwarming stories and anecdotes shared by pals of the former Beverly Hills 90210 star that have painted him, as a neighbour described, “a humble, decent dude”.

Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, took to Instagram to share a story about how Perry once helped calm down two screaming children on a flight.

“I only met him once but the story is too good not tell given today’s sad events. My wife and I are on a plane back from Mexico. Couple of rows ahead of us, these two brothers, young kids, are beating the hell out of each other. Their poor parents are powerless to stop the crying, yelling and screaming,” Hanks shared in a lengthy Instagram post.

“Out of no where, a man comes from first class. Hat, beard, sunglasses, blowing up a balloon. He ties it off, hands it off like he’s holding out a sword to a king. Kneeling, Head down, arms up. Kids calm down in milliseconds. Plane damn near bursts into applause.

‘We get off the plane, are waiting on line in customs. Finally get a good look at the guy and I say to my wife ‘holy s**t. I think that balloon man/hero’ is Luke Perry’. As luck would have it we end up standing next to each other.

I only met him once but the story is too good not tell given todays sad events. My wife and I are on a plane back from Mexico. Couple of rows ahead of us, these two brothers, young kids, are beating the hell out of eachother. Their poor parents are powerless to stop the crying, yelling and screaming. If you’re a parent you understand. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do. It was like this for close to two hours. Then about 10 minutes before landing it starts to get real bad. Out of no where, a man comes from first class. Hat, beard, sunglasses, blowing up a balloon. He ties it off, hands it off like he’s holding out a sword to a king. Kneeling, Head down, arms up. Kids calm down in milliseconds. Plane damn near bursts into applause. 15 minutes longer and it probably would have started WWIII, but we landed before that could happen. We get off the plane, are waiting on line in customs. Finally get a good look at the guy and I say to my wife “Holy shit. I think that balloon man/hero” is Luke Perry”. As luck would have it we end up standing next to each other. Out of the blue he turns to me and says some kind words about Fargo, which kinda blew my mind. I start singing his praises about how long I’ve admired him and also about the move with the balloon. “That’s a pro move! You can’t teach that!” I say. He tells me he always flies with a couple of balloons for that very reason, to give to screaming kids. Don’t know if that’s true, but have no reason to believe it wasn’t. Guy seemed like a true gent. Gone way too damn soon. Also, I’ll be damned if I don’t start traveling with some spare balloons 🎈🎈🎈 #promove #rip #lukeperry #truegent

Eva Anderson, a writer and daughter of Night Court actor Harry Anderson, tweeted that Perry had lived next door to her grandfather.

“Luke Perry was a truly lovely next-door neighbour to my grandfather and aunt. Like, he came over to replace light bulbs all the time. Sending so much love to his family. This is the worst,” she tweeted.

Film critic Amy Nicholson responded to Anderson’s sentiments.

“This is how I’ll remember him, too. At your grandpa’s birthday being the really nice neighbour who helped with the trash cans,” she tweeted.

Others recalled Perry helping out during the 2010 floods in Tennessee, which devastated the area.

Perry joined a group of volunteers to help those affected by distributing water and food.

“Y’all might know Luke Perry had some land here in Tennessee. Maybe you don’t know that during the flood of 2010, he was out there bringing people food, bottles of water, and shoes. Just a humble, decent dude,” Josh Raby tweeted.

Perry was also mourned by US politician Sherrod Brown and former Obama staffer Michael O’Neil who shared stories of how he helped campaign in Ohio.

”I met Luke Perry in ‘06 — he came home to Ohio to campaign for Sherrod Brown (Sherrod’s father, a Mansfield doctor, delivered Luke). Luke did events across Ohio. We offered a driver, but his high school buddy drove him in a beat up car. Zero ego. I’m very sorry for his family,” O’Neil tweeted.

“Very saddened by this loss,” Brown added. “Luke Perry was not only a talented actor — but a warm, kind person who made his home state proud. My thoughts are with his friends, family, and loved ones.”

One man who met Perry at his local Blockbuster tweeted: “I said this last week, but he was the nicest customer we had at our Blockbuster, and it isn’t even a close competition. There was never one visit where he was anything but considerate.”

Perry died in Los Angeles on Monday after being hospitalised after a massive stroke last week.

Those at Perry’s bedside included his children, Jake and Sophie; fiancee Wendy Madison Bauer; former wife, Minnie Sharp, and mother Ann Bennett.

“The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning,” his publicist Arnold Robinson said in a statement.

Perry was most recently seen n the teen drama Riverdale. Show bosses have not yet decided what to do with his character.

Perry will also be seen alongside Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio be in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, which is due for release in July.
