THEY are steeped in history, “rare as hens’ teeth” and property gold mines for savvy house hunters.

A host of ‘time capsule’ homes have hit the market in Brisbane for the first time in decades, taking prospective buyers back to their childhoods and offering a slice of the city’s past.

Some look like something straight out of ‘Mad Men’, others are turn-of-the-century charmers stuck in a time warp, and then there are the complete hovels sitting on millions of dollars worth of prime real estate.

One of the latest ‘golden oldies’ to hit the market is a post-war, timber home on a big block in the sought-after suburb of Holland Park West, which goes to auction today after being in the one family for 64 years.

In a sad twist, the owner had moved in to the house at 15 Barton St, Holland Park West with his new wife on their honeymoon in 1954 and lived there until he was 100 years old.

He died just a couple of months after his birthday.

His daughter, Jeanette Tappin, grew up in the three-bedroom property and has been reluctant to sell.

Mrs Tappin said she hoped whoever bought it would keep it as a family home.

“To be honest, nothing has really changed in the house,” Mrs Tappin said.

“I hope (the buyer) won’t knock it down because dad loved the house, but I totally understand it’s not for everybody.

“I just think it would be a fantastic place for a family to live.”

Marketing agent Shane Hicks of Place – Bulimba said the home was appealing to renovators, first home buyers and families looking to knock it down and rebuild.

“This home is exactly as it was originally, with the exception of sometime in the ‘70s, a kitchen update and probably a bit of a bathroom update,” Mr Hicks said.

“When you get (a property) that hasn’t been touched like this, as a renovator you’ve got a blank canvas to work with.”

Mr Hicks said ‘time capsule’ properties were attractive investments because they usually had only had one owner, so were well cared for and “generally solid homes”.

He said those kind of homes were coming to market more often, though still quite rare.

“While they are a tad hard to get hold of, they are coming about more because the older people living in them are more satisfied with alternative accommodation options — either unit living or retirement living,” he said.

The old adage, ‘Location, location, location’ applies to a property on Teneriffe Hill that is for sale for the first time in more than half a century.

Local developer Frank Licastro and his public relations executive fiancee, Kaitie Mulherin, were not even born the last time the character home at 40 Teneriffe Drive was on the market.

But Mr Licastro, of Frank Developments, is always on the lookout for his next project and properties like this are on his radar.

Marketing agent Ivo Kornel of Belle Property – New Farm said the home’s owner was in her 70s, had raised her family there and it was now too big for her alone.

Mr Kornel said she hosted an annual Christmas party for the Teneriffe Hill residents — a tradition which the family would like to see continued in future.

“This is one of the great homes — and positions — of Brisbane,” he said.

“It’s elevated, up on Teneriffe Hill, river views, northeast aspect, it has the only drive through driveway in all of Teneriffe/New Farm.

“To get all of those things on over 1000 sqm is as rare as hens’ teeth.”

Mr Kornel said the circa 1908 home attracted 25 groups at its first open inspection, with a mix of families and young couples who were planning to have a family.

“You also have those buyers, who are caretakers you could say, who would buy something like that to say they once owned it and be part of the history of the house,” he said.

Teneriffe is Brisbane’s most expensive suburb, with a median house price of $1.67 million according to the latest Corelogic data.
