Eye-catching reno elevates grand South Yarra home

A vibrant renovation has taken this 1870s Victorian to a new level, while keeping its period charm intact.

And it could be yours — for $7-$7.7 million.

Kay & Burton’s Peter Kudelka said the single-level South Yarra stunner underwent a major overhaul in the late-1990s, with the grand facade and front two rooms refreshed and a contemporary extension added at the rear.

A secondary reno in 2012-13 added an extra bedroom.

“The decor is very refreshing — not beige-on-beige like a lot of them are today,” Mr Kudelka said.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom pad at 83 Caroline St is now being sold privately, with offers closing at noon on March 1.

An elegant entry hallway feeds off into a formal lounge and main bedroom, both with ornate fireplaces and the latter featuring an ensuite that wouldn’t look out of place at a tropical resort.

At the rear is a vast open-plan living and dining zone with floor-to-ceiling glass and a commercial kitchen, which opens out to a west-facing alfresco courtyard warmed by a fireplace.

Ceilings soar 3-4m in height throughout.

And a basement wine cellar, renovated original cottage and triple-A position, walking distance to the Royal Botanic Gardens, top schools and the shops of Toorak Rd and Chapel St, complete the package.

Mr Kudelka has the listing with RT Edgar Toorak director Jeremy Fox.
