Donald Trump has paid tribute to winning college football team the Clemson Tigers with a fancy White House soiree.
For an extravagant meal hosted by the celebrity billionaire US President, you’d expect a fancy wagyu steak dinner. Gold-encrusted plates. A few bottles of Dom Perignon.
What you wouldn’t expect is a buffet of some of the world’s least healthy fast food.
“I think we’re going to serve McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger Kings with some pizza,” Mr Trump told reporters outside the White House before the event. “I really mean it. It will be interesting.”
Some assumed he was joking, but the President made good on his promise:
Mr Trump attributed his odd choice of cuisine to the ongoing partial government shutdown.
“So I had a choice,” he told the team during dinner. “Do we have no food for you? Because we have a shutdown. Or do we give you some little, quick salads that the First Lady will make?” he asked.
“I said, you guys aren’t into salads.”
He went on to list the “all American companies” providing the food, including Burger King, Wendy’s and McDonald’s.
“We have everything that I like, that you like,” he said, “and I know no matter what we did, there’s nothing you could have that’s better than that, right?”
At the end of his comments at the White House, he said: “To all of the amazing athletes here today, that wiped more food than any human being has ever seen before, including me — I’ve never seen so much — thank you for inspiring America.”
Naturally, the bizarre food selection raised eyebrows on social media:
He’s prouder of these hamburgers than he is of his adult sons https://t.co/tQunBaeuoH

“Sir, this is a Wendy’s” went from meme to reality pretty quickly.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement saying the odd choice of food was a “fun event to celebrate the College Football National Champion Clemson Tigers”.
The statement also blamed Democratic politicians for the odd choice, saying Mr Trump was providing the meal at his own expense.
“Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed — so the President is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone’s favourite fast foods.”
Mr Trump’s love of fast food has been well documented over the years. He is a self-professed germaphobe who prefers eating at fast-food restaurants because he believes they have higher food safety standards.
He has posted several pictures of himself chowing down on McDonald’s and KFC, as well as this infamous tweet on Cinco de Mayo in 2016:

Well, at least he’s keeping American stereotypes alive and well.
