As the US continues to be crippled by a federal government shutdown, people on both sides of politics have found an unlikely voice of reason — rapper Cardi B.
The I Like It musician took to Instagram to give her take as the political crisis enters its 27th day, with Donald Trump’s administration now recalling tens of thousands of federal workers to return to their jobs without pay.
An estimated 800,000 workers have been without pay cheques since a gridlock between Democrats and Republicans over funding Mr Trump’s US-Mexico border wall caused the government to partially shut down.
Cardi, visibly frustrated by the government shutdown, gave a rather explicit explanation as to why she disagreed with comparisons to the Obama shutdown.
“Hey y’all, I just wanted to remind you because it’s been a little over three weeks. Trump is now ordering, as in summonsing, federal government workers to go back to work without getting paid,” she said.
“Now, I don’t wanna hear y’all motherf***ers talking about, ‘Oh, but Obama shut down the government for 17 days.’ Yeah, b*tch, for healthcare.
“So your grandma could check her blood pressure, and you b*tches could go check your pussies at the gynaecologist with no motherf***ing problem.
“This sh*t is really f***ing serious, bro. This sh*t is crazy. Our country is in a hellhole right now, all for a f***ing wall. And we really need to take this seriously.
“I feel like we need to take some action … B*tch, I’m scared. This is crazy. And I really feel bad for these people that gotta go to f***ing work to not get motherf***ing paid.”
Despite the colourful language, Cardi’s take on the shutdown resonated with politicians on both sides and soon became a topic of conversation on US TV news channels like MSNBC.
Republican strategist and CNN political commentator Ana Navarro was among the first to share Cardi’s video, tweeting that the “rapper’s sentiment is shared by many Americans”.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and other Democratic senators also debated whether to share Cardi’s video.
For her part, Cardi seemed surprised that her Instagram video was being debated by some of the US’s top politician minds.
It’s not the first time Cardi has gone after the President, posting another video to Instagram on Wednesday in which she compared Mr Trump to an unknown rapper who wants fame.
“He’s like one of these new rap artists — they follow, they do the most for clout. And Trump wants that. Some people can have money, all the power in the world, but they really want that fame. His legacy, he wants to go down as that bad person,” Cardi said.
She also labelled his supporters “racist rednecks,” adding: “Even if motherf***ers build the wall, that’s still not going to f***ing prevent people coming into this country.”
